September 11, 2010 – Orchestra Day
In honor of the tragedy of 9-11 and in the spirit of American pride and resilience, the 2010 Orchestra Day literature will be New World Symphony, Antonín Dvořák. Orchestra Day will include a full day of rehearsals, master classes, and pizza as well as an evening performance of the work. Current students or those who have enrolled for the fall are required to attend (no charge). Other students will be charged a fee of $15 to participate. CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS!
November 7, 2010 – Fall Concert
Major work will be The Planets by Gustav Holst. Location TBD.
November 30, 2010 – Special Concert
Youth Orchestra will serve as the accompanying orchestra for From the Barrio. The performance includes playing compositions created by children from countries who celebrate their independence bicentennials in 2010 (Argentina, Colombia, Chile, México and Venezuela) and the Orchestra Program for Youth at Risk in the Caribbean’s beneficiary countries (Haiti, Jamaica and Saint Lucia). This project is in cooperation with the Organization of American States and University of North Carolina. Concert Hall, Kennedy Center. Orchestra under the guest direction of Maestro Mariano Vales.
December 12, 2010 – Holiday Concert
Students of the Youth Orchestra and Junior Philharmonic will together provide music for a sing-a-long of portions of The Messiah, George Frederick Handel. Audience members will be invited to sing along. Grand Foyer, Kennedy Center.
February 16, 2011 – High School Choir Festival
Youth Orchestra will perform with area high school choirs and a mass choir for the festival. Literature TBD. National Cathedral.
March 20, 2011 – Spring Concert
Major work will be Pictures at an Exhibition, Modest Mussorgsky (orchestrated by Maurice Ravel) Location (to be confirmed) THEARC. There will be a drawing contest by area children and the winning drawings will be shown during the performance.
May 23, 2011 – Year-End Concert (Concerto Concert)
Major works include Short Ride in a Fast Machine by John Adams and Eroica Symphony (No. 3) by Ludwig Van Beethoven. This performance also features the 2010-11 Season Concerto Competition Winner. Terrace Theatre, Kennedy Center.
