DCYOP - The Program


Youth Orchestra
: The best students of the program will achieve the highest level of proficiency and placement in the program. These top students come together to play standard orchestra literature, together in a 70+ piece orchestra under the direction of the organization's Music Director, Maestro Berard.

The DCYOP Youth Orchestra is a full orchestra consisting of students who have been placed in the top two proficiency levels within the program (levels K and L). The Youth Orchestra travels on tour, usually internationally, approximately every 3-5 years. The Youth Orchestra performs four regular season concerts and one holiday concert annually, in addition to any special scheduled programs in a variety of venues. Beginning in the 2007-08 Season, the Youth Orchestra will be conducted by Maestro Berard.

In the 2004-05 season, the Youth Orchestra combined with the Junior Philharmonic was afforded the honor of performing at the Organization of American States. Among the personalities in attendance were OAS' Acting Secretary General, Ambassador Luigi Einaudi and Inter-American Development Bank Vice President Enrique Iglesias; Virginia Williams, mother of Washington DC Mayor Anthony Williams; and members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of cultural foundations in Washington, DC. Junior Philharmonic: The DCYOP Junior Philharmonic is a full orchestra consisting of students who have been placed in the I and J proficiency levels within the program. The Junior Philharmonic, with the Youth Orchestra, performs four regular season concerts and one holiday concert annually, in addition to any special scheduled programs in a variety of venues.

The top orchestras perform in a variety of visible venues: In the 2004-05 season, the Junior Philharmonic combined with the Youth Orchestra was afforded the honor of performing at the Organization of American States. Among the personalities in attendance were OAS' Acting Secretary General, Ambassador Luigi Einaudi and Inter-American Development Bank Vice President Enrique Iglesias; Virginia Hayes-Williams, mother of Washington DC Mayor Anthony Williams; and members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of cultural foundations in Washington, DC. In the 2005-06 Season, the Junior Philharmonic and the Youth Orchestra Performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, under the direction of Marvin Hamlisch.


Virtuosi Chamber Orchestras: String students in levels I, J, K, and L, are chosen to perform in chamber string orchestras in addition to their regular full orchestra participation. Participation is by invitation. Students in the Young Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra (YVCO) are the elite string musicians in the program and are students looking for additional opportunities to perform. Students in the Junior Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra (JVCO) are those students the organization envisions as the future section leaders of the top orchestra.

The JVCO and other small chamber ensembles perform regularly at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park auditorium. The YVCO has performed in a variety of venues and for a variety of audiences, including: The Coming Up Taller Awards for First Lady Laura Bush, the Daughters of the American Revolution at Constitution Hall, and for the Laurel Fund for the Performing Arts at the first annual Capital Talents celebration. A group of the VYCO students performed at the White House for the Helping America’s Youth Conference in 2005.
