Beginner Musicians
Children can take their first steps towards learning a musical instrument in a DCYOP Beginners Group Class and continue in a Beginners Ensemble
DCYOP accepts any student age 4.5 – 18.
Beginner Student Program registration is held only in the Fall for a full school year, culminating in a concert in May. Registration for 2026-27 beginner program is open now and closes September 10, 2026. Students 4.5 and up are welcome to join one of 40 beginner group classes to learn the foundations of music, instruments, and explore the wonder of being part of an orchestra.
WHO IT'S FOR
Our Beginner Group Class program is a full one year program for children ages 4 ½ and up who are just picking up a musical instrument for the very first time or are new to their instrument and still mastering the basics of music.
Students commit to participating in the program for a full academic year starting in September and culminating in the students’ first performance at our spring concerts each May.
In most cases, students are expected to attend with a trusted adult who learns alongside their child and helps them practice during the school week. Class enrollment is limited to ensure that students and parents receive sufficient individual attention and opportunities to interact with the instructor.
WHAT TO EXPECT
For beginners, excellence isn’t about already being good, it’s about discovering what’s possible. It’s about discovering the wonder of music and witnessing the moment when a student realizes they can learn something hard, express something real, and belong in music even if they’re brand new.
Our teachers meet students where they are and help them build strong foundations in technique, listening, reading music, and confidence. But just as importantly, they help students develop an emotional vocabulary for music. Students learn how to communicate, feel, and grow through the music they play. Some students will go on to join an ensemble and continue their journey, but every student gains something lasting: pride, courage, and a sense of identity.

This is a place where beginners are welcome and where students can start exactly where they are.
We believe the first step into music should feel exciting and safe and provide space for curiosity, wonder, and the excitement of picking an instrument.
Once they have mastered the basics, they can move up to a beginners ensemble and begin to experience the world of working together and creating music as a team.

Tuition & Financial Assistance
Tuition covers lessons/sectionals, rehearsals, concerts, evaluations and master classes. While the average cost per student is $3,000 per year, DCYOP subsidizes tuition to $1,200 per year for all students to ensure its programs are affordable and accessible. We offer additional financial assistance on a sliding scale. Learn more.
