DCYOPrelude

Continuing the Legacy of Instrumental Music Education in DC Public Schools

DCYOP was started in 1960 at the request of DC Public Schools. Today, we continue to offer free afterschool music programs in Title 1 elementary and middle schools in DC to ensure every child has access to music education.

DCYOPrelude programs are offered 3 days a week from 3:30-5:30pm.

Students enrolled in DCYOPrelude programs are encouraged to enroll in our citywide programming on Saturdays and are automatically qualified for our highest level of tuition assistance.

Current DCYOPrelude Programs

Bridging the gap of music education in these DC schools with programs that create a community for students through music and removes barriers to music participation.

The Power of Music

DCYOPrelude cultivates growth for students in grades 2 to 8 at our partner schools through high-quality, curriculum-based programming.

Impact of Music on Students:

Students and parents involved in DCYOPrelude become an active part of their school community. Parental and community involvement is strengthened through accessible performances.

Students engaged in music programming grow in confidence, cooperative learning, focus, and discipline.

Young children taking music lessons show different brain development leading to improved memory, improved speech, and reading scores.
